Airport and free trade zone, where export fumigation and factory work dominate.

Katunayake is the airport and the free trade zone, and the work here is more industrial than anywhere else we cover. Factories, warehouses, freight handlers and the hotels serving transit passengers make up most of it, and very little resembles a domestic call out.

Export fumigation is the service this town asks for most. Sawn wood, crating, bulk tea, spice consignments, coir products and much else besides will be turned away on arrival unless the paperwork is there, and it is the country receiving the goods, rather than anyone here, that dictates how much is used, how long it is held and what the certificate has to look like. An error discovered at the quayside costs money nobody gets back, which is why we want the destination and the goods described before a price is given, not after.

A site assessment and a written safety plan come before any fumigation. Gas travels wherever a gap allows it, so the neighbouring units, the people still on site, the quality of the seal and the plan for clearing the space are all agreed before a date is confirmed. Access is controlled for the full exposure period and the space is not released until it has been ventilated and gas cleared.

Factory work in the zone is a different discipline again. Production areas, canteens, stores and staff facilities each need methods appropriate to the zone they are in, and those are agreed with the technical team before the programme starts rather than decided by a technician on a routine visit. Where a site is certified to a standard, the reporting is built to it.

Warehouses and freight sheds carry the rodent pressure typical of large buildings with constant door movement, and the answer is the building envelope first: shutter seals, roof junctions, service penetrations and the doors that stand open through a shift.

The hotels around the airport run to a different rhythm from any others we serve. Rooms turn over at odd hours because flights do, so the quiet window is rarely the middle of the night. Bed bug response has to be quick because a room out of service on a high turnover site costs more than it would elsewhere.

Staff facilities are frequently the weak point on an otherwise well run industrial site. Locker rooms, prayer rooms and rest areas accumulate food that production areas never see, and they sit outside the zoning that governs everything else. Where a factory has a persistent problem despite good production hygiene, those rooms are usually where it lives.

Freight sheds and transit storage carry a particular risk because material does not stay long enough for anyone to take ownership of it. A pallet held for three days is nobody responsibility, and that is exactly long enough for something to establish. Monitoring at the point where goods rest, rather than only around the walls, is what catches it.

A property serving early departures has a genuinely quiet window that a property serving late arrivals does not, and scheduling to the real pattern rather than an assumed one is what keeps rooms in service.
