Nugegoda

Dense suburban housing mixed with one of the busiest retail strips in the Colombo suburbs.

Nugegoda has changed faster than almost anywhere else in the Colombo suburbs. Large garden plots have been divided and rebuilt as two and three storey houses, and the stretch along High Level Road has filled with shops, restaurants and small offices sitting directly underneath and behind that housing. Pest work here nearly always crosses between the two.

The commercial strip is what drives the problem. Food outlets, bakeries, supermarkets and their waste generate constant pressure at ground level, and the housing immediately behind absorbs the consequences. When a house near Jambugasmulla or Old Kesbewa Road reports cockroaches, the source is often a shared drain or a bin store belonging to a business on the main road. We say so when that is what we find, because treating the same kitchen every two months without dealing with the source is not a service worth paying for.

The newer three storey builds bring their own issue. Packed close together, sharing boundary walls and drainage, and often with a ground floor given over to parking or a small business, they let rodents and cockroaches move between properties easily. A treatment that stops at one property line tends to disappoint, so on terraced streets we would rather look at two or three adjoining houses than repeat a single treatment.

Termite pressure is steady rather than dramatic. The older houses that remain have substantial timber roof structures, and the mature trees and long established gardens that survive subdivision keep soil moisture high against boundary walls. Most termite work here starts with somebody noticing mud tubes on a garden wall rather than inside the house.

Apartment blocks around Nugegoda junction and towards Nawala need the same treatment as the city: the population usually lives in the service risers rather than in any one flat, so where a management company is involved we would rather treat the shared areas and ducts than one unit at a time.

Commercially, this is retail and food service more than industry. Kitchens along the main road are treated with gel bait rather than sprays so the room keeps working, and visits are booked for closed hours between services. Offices above the shops need pantry and waste area work outside business hours.

Nugegoda sits on our daily route into the city, so response here is quick and a repeat visit is easy to schedule. Parking on the main road is the one practical constraint, so tell us when you book whether there is access at the rear.

Waste handling is the single biggest variable between two otherwise identical streets here. Where a lane has a collection that runs on time and bins that stay closed, pressure stays low. Where a collection slips over a weekend, or bins sit open behind a food outlet, a street can go from clear to serious inside a month. When that is the finding we report it plainly, because it is the actual cause and not something we would rather not treat.

Building work is a recurring trigger in a town still being rebuilt plot by plot. Demolition or excavation next door reliably pushes rodents into neighbouring properties for a few weeks, and the household that calls us is rarely the one that caused it. If there is construction beside you, say so when you call: it changes what we expect to find and how long the work needs to run.

What we would ask before a visit is simple. Tell us which rooms you have seen activity in, whether it is daytime or at night, and whether there is a food business sharing your boundary or your drain. Those three answers usually decide whether this is a one property job or a street level one, and they change what the technician arrives prepared to do.

Questions we are asked in Nugegoda

The cockroaches seem to come from the restaurant behind us. Can you treat that?
We can only treat premises whose owner has engaged us, but we will tell you plainly when the source is next door and put it in the written report. That report is often what a landlord or a management committee needs before they will act, and it is more useful than another treatment of your own kitchen.
Do you work on the High Level Road shops during opening hours?
No. Food premises along the main road are treated in closed hours, either before opening or after the last service, and the technician works to that window rather than to their own route. Tell us your quiet day when you book.
