Panadura

Coastal town at the river mouth, with housing, retail and light industry in a compact area.

Panadura sits where the river meets the sea, and the ground either side of that river mouth holds water long after rain. That single fact accounts for most of the seasonal pest pressure in the town: mosquito breeding that persists for weeks, and rodents moving out of flooded ground and into buildings whenever the water rises.

The town centre is compact and mixed. Shops, small restaurants, banks and offices sit along the Galle Road with housing immediately behind, and the lanes between them carry the waste. Rodent work in the residential streets very often turns out to be about a commercial bin store a few doors away, and we will say so when that is what we find.

Panadura is on our southern route and is usually grouped with Kalutara on the same trip, which keeps a visit affordable and normally gets an earlier date than asking for a dedicated journey.

Places of worship and the halls attached to them are a particular case in this town. They fill and empty on a weekly rhythm, food is prepared for events rather than daily, and storage areas sit unused between times. That combination suits rodents and cockroaches, and the useful pattern is a scheduled visit timed to the quiet part of the week rather than a call out after an event.

Small factories and stores around the town hold material at ground level, often against an outside wall, and that is where the proofing list starts. A store with an established population feeds the housing beside it continuously, so treating the houses alone is a result that lasts weeks rather than seasons.
